ELIZABETH BLANCKE-BIGGS is recognized as one of the most exciting lirico-spinto sopranos on the international scene today. Critics worldwide have praised her virtuosic bel canto technique, the beauty and color of her voice, her pyrotechnic coloratura, and her unerring theatricality. Hailed as one of the best young Verdi singers by Placido Domingo, she has had international successes as Violetta in Verdi’s La Traviata at New York’s Metropolitan Opera, Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda at Torino’s Teatro Regio, Abigaille in Verdi’s Nabucco at Santiago Chile’s Teatro Municipal, Minnie in La Fanciulla del West and Tosca at Florida Grand Opera, Tosca and Mimì in La Bohème at New York City Opera, and Bellini’s Norma and Fanciulla at London’s Opera Holland Park. She was recently featured in a new production of Aida at Opera Omaha.
Upcoming engagements include Norma for Palm Beach Opera and Abigaille in Nabucco for the Aspendos Festival at the Roman amphitheater in Antalya, Turkey. Recent seasons have seen her in concert singing Leonora in Verdi’s Il Trovatore with Opera New Jersey, and Elvira in Verdi’s Ernani with the American Opera Theatre in Palm Springs, CA, both under the direction of Michael Recchiuti. For the Washington Opera, she appeared as Giordani’s Fedora with Placido Domingo in a gala performance. She also toured in Japan with the Metropolitan Opera as Ortlinde in Die Walküre.
Also active on the concert stage, she has sung Verdi’s Messa da Requiem with the Los Angeles Master Chorale in their first requiem in the new Disney Concert Hall, and with the Voices of Ascension in New York City; Brahms’ Ein Deutches Requiem at Lincoln Center; Honneger’s Le Rôi David with the Phiharmonic de Nice; Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with both the Orquestra Sinfonica Nacionàl de Costa Rica and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra; Verdi’s Requiem at the Orange County Performing Arts Centre; and Carmina Burana with the NZSO under Sir David Wilcox. Also with the NZSO: An Evening in Vienna; Ortlinde in Die Walküre with Sir Donald McIntyre; and Mozart’s Mass in C Minor. Other concerts include: Beethoven’s Mass in C, Mozart’s Vesparae Solennes, Stravinsky’s Mass and the Fauré Requiem along with two acclaimed recitals for the NZ International Festival of the Arts and many recitals and concerts as a Concert Artist for Radio NZ.
Other roles she has sung include Elena in I Vespri Siciliani, Desdemona in Otello, Ciò Ciò San in Madama Butterfly, Liù in Turandot, Suor Angelica, Giorgetta in Il Tabarro, Nedda in I Pagliacci, Micaëla in Carmen, and La Countessa in Le Nozze di Figaro.
